Bouviers are originally farm dogs from the area of Flandres. They were used primarily as cattle dogs but were also used for guarding purposes and cart pulling. In the early years of Bouvier breeding there were great variations in types and construction, but because of the Bouvier temperament and character they became increasingly popular, and in the beginning of the 20th century a kind of breed standard were produced.
Since these years the Bouvier has gained success all over the world. The bouvier have retained their working abilities and is therefore both an active familydog, a good working/competing dog and also a successful show dog. Today, the Bouvier des Flandres still work as police dogs, military dogs, service dogs and so on.
The breed was introduced in Sweden in the 1960s and today there are about one thousand dogs living here. About 70-90 dogs are born in Sweden every year.
A bouv is a strong, compact dog with a calm, wise and fearless impression. Their intelligence along with their independence (originally bred to herd by making their own decisions – not to obey orders) makes it a bit of a challenge to train them. But once that you have found the rewards that your Bouv finds appropriate – you can count with success! The bouvier is an allround dog and one can almost do anything with your bouv: tracking, protection, agility, obedience, herding etc.
The breed, as any other larger breed, of course needs daily excercise and it will happily be your jogging or biking companion. The coat requires regular grooming and if you are afraid of getting dirt into you house – do not buy a bouvier! Even though it hardly sheds at all the fur brings sand, mud and so on into your house.
There is a quite picturing text about the breed that is called ”Don’t buy a bouvier” on the Internet. Please google it to find out more about the nature of the bouvier! You can also contact us of course
